Is the United States an Imperial Counrty?
We have been reading about the age of imperialism. In the early 1900's imperialism was accepted practice among the powerful countries of the world. Since then imperialism has fallen out of favor and is viewed negatively. The question I want you to consider is is the United States an imperialist country today. And is imperialism actually bad.

ReplyDeleteI believe that the US is imperialistic. However, I don't think that imperialism is always a bad thing. The US has avoided conflicts in Cuba and Mexico by going into those countries and stopping the problem before it happens.
ReplyDeleteSarah, we use our military to stop others from mistreating their citizens. Saddam Hussein was only hurting his country, we went in and used our military to stop him. HE WAS A BAD GUY and we went and helped them stop him.

ReplyDeleteI think the U.S. was more imperialistic in the 1900's. Now that everyone is content with the land they have and the control they have there's not a big reason for us to be anymore.

ReplyDeleteKelsey I don't think thats what America's main goal is. I do believe that America is trigger-happy and we go into countries for our benefit and destroy their way of life and then we leave them in destruction. We force our way of thinking onto countries who can't stand up for themselves.
ReplyDeleteSarah, we force them to do what is right, it's not like we're forcing them to kill innocent children. We are forcing them to treat people right. If people in this country don't agree with what we do, they can go to those countries and live that life for a while, I guarantee you that they hope everyday that America comes in and helps them.

ReplyDeleteI think Kelsey can have her opinions, but I think that she needs to be more of a realist. America isn't the innocent country that we lead our citizens to believe. We are domineering and controlling of anyone who is not as civilized as us. We go into other's countries for strictly our benefit.

ReplyDeleteTheir government doesn't want to change because they're DICTATORS. The PEOPLE OF THOSE COUNTRIES were being oppressed. We helped them. Obviously the DICTATORS didn't want it to change because they were DICTATING that country exactly the way they wanted it. The PEOPLE OF THOSE COUNTRIES are the ones we care about, not the dictators.

ReplyDeleteImperialism, when carried out well, can be a good thing for a third-world country. But in most cases, for example: European countries in Africa, it can hurt a country. It can cause death, loss of money for both countries, and when the imperialist country pulls out, it can cause anarchy in the poor country after the imperialist country pulls out

ReplyDeleteI thought so and it also doesn't help that we are mainly involved with Iraq and them because of our precious oil we did not have much involvement with them (aside from some trade) until the Twin towers were blown to pieces and our precious oil was in jeopardy

ReplyDeleteThe United States has definitely done a great deal to bring liberty and prosperity to other nations. But we generally do it to bring a greater benefit to ourselves. I don't agree with the last article completely because I do think our nation truly does value liberty and prosperity for other countries. But I do agree that we also do it mainly to advance the business interest of our on elite people.

ReplyDeleteImperialism can be kind of good if a country doesn't ask for it necessarily because they may need help. We're not being imperialist if we're giving aid such as water or food. We're being imperialist if we send our military in to correct their government.

ReplyDeleteso ive been thinking, and i must say the US is imperialist and it is due to th efact that we have the power to be imperialist and that we do it good. we can make it look like the imperialist things that we do are not bad and we are trying to do it for the good of another country when we are really only doing it for the benifit of ourselves which is cleary the better decision.

We bought sugar from Hawaii that was cheaper than that bought from people in the U.S. So the sugar cane farmer people weren't very happy because we're buying sugar from Hawaii and not them so they're not making any money.

ReplyDeleteDoes anyone remember like 2 summers ago? We WERE in Iraq, but gas prices were sky rocketing. If we were getting everything you guys claim we went over there for in the first place eight years ago, we wouldn't have to pay so much for gas. We did have good intentions.
